A brief history of the Palazzo and Hotel Scalinata di Spagna

The first trunk of the building where the Hotel Scalinata di Spagna is located was built between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century on the ruins of the buttresses of a Roman villa, starting from Piazza Mignanelli up to Piazza Trinità dei Monti, with entrances from Rampa Mignanelli 12 and from Piazza Trinità dei Monti 16.

In the 19th century there was a 5-level elevation, which allowed the building to have floors with a beautiful view of the whole city. The construction ended in 1888, with the entrance also from Via Gregoriana 25.

The building, still used as a residential building and offices, with shops on the ground floor, had the Ugo family as its sole owner, whose progenitors, 2 architects, Achille and Enrico, carried out the construction.

During the Nazi occupation, a Jewish family was hosted and hidden in the building for 9 months. Among the important personalities who lived there we can mention the sculptor Rodin, our own Gabriele D'Annunzio, the musician and orchestra conductor Roman Vlad and lastly the Roman architect Paolo Portoghesi.

In 1926, in a part of the building, with an entrance directly on Piazza Trinità dei Monti 17, the Pensione Scalinata di Spagna came to life, on the initiative of two Swiss sisters named Pfister.

In the 1950s, the Pensione had Mr. Peppino Ciaceri as its new manager, who already lived in the building and had an antique shop right next to the hotel entrance.

In 1985 the management was handed over to the Bellia family. Mr. Bellia, born in Venice, and his German wife gradually introduced their children Renato and Claudia into the management. The first transformed the pension into a three-star hotel with 16 rooms, always with the name of the Spanish Steps. The second project and managed the construction of the last architectural renovation, carried out for the Jubilee of 2000, giving life to the current structure of a classic type, with fabrics on the walls, retro boiserie and Murano chandeliers.

The atmosphere produced, typical of a beautiful and charming Roman house, gave rise to coining the phrase "Your home in Rome" as a distinctive element of the Hotel Scalinata di Spagna.

In 2013, the brothers Fabrizio and Massimo Jemma, great-grandsons of the builder Enrico Ugo and heirs of the portion of the building involved in the Hotel, also acquired the management and undertook both a profound conservative restructuring of the historic part, restoring and enhancing the work carried out by Claudia Bellia, is an appreciable expansion of the Hotel.

The latter involved other portions of the building, owned by them, with rooms from which you can admire an incredible panorama of Rome, a very nice Art Deco-style apartment, owned by their cousin Carla Tomasi and an Outbuilding with panoramic balconies overlooking Piazza di Spagna, giving the current layout of 36 rooms and a hotel partly in a classic style and partly in a modern style.
